WaterWay Conducts annual Hose and Ladder Testing
June 28th 2024

Waterway Twin Tier, LLC is in Laflin today conducting annual hose and ladder testing.

This annual testing puts our equipment through rigorous testing by trained technicians to ensure it is ready for service at a moments notice and checks for any potential damage sustained from firefighting activities that may have effected the integrity of the equipment.
Structure Fire in the Boro
June 12th 2024 the Laflin Fire Department and mutual aid companies were called to Passan Drive in Laflin for a general fire alarm. These types of incidents happen frequently and are often found to be faulty detectors or other instances of false alarms. However they’re no less of an emergency than others we handle.
Units arrived to find no evidence of fire from the outside and no evacuation however once entry was made to the locked facility, a heavy smoke condition was encountered and sprinkler heads activated leading to finding a fire within the building.
Members worked for approximately 3 hours with extinguishing the remaining fire, and ventilating the large building.
Laflin Fire highlights New Rescue
May 19th 2024 we’re finally highlighting our most recent addition to the fleet replacing our previous rescue that was over 30 years old.
After countless hours of work by our volunteers, Rescue 2 is complete and in service. Since it arrived, it received a complete LED lighting upgrade, graphics, equipment mounting and fresh paint. Carrying 300 gallons of water and a 500GPM pump ensures there is suppression capable fire apparatus available when the Engine is on a call or out for service.
Most importantly, the Rescue Squad is well equipped for vehicle rescue, Rapid Intervention Team responses and some technical rescue emergencies and has the ability to run 4 hydraulic vehicle extrication tools simultaneously.
We’d like to thank Frontline Graphix Inc and Laflin resident Ed Stankus who made custom metal mounting brackets and a hose bed divider allowing the Rescue to carry 500’ of supply hose.
Laflin Fire attends Avoca Touch a Truck

Laflin Fire assists Dupont and Avoca Fire

Snow Storm brings a call for the Rescue
February 13th 2024 The “cancelled” snow storm brought the Rescue Squad out for this car into a ditch and tree on Rt.315 in Laflin early this morning. Luckily there were no injuries.
If you do not need to travel today, please stay home. All local and state roads are slick and snow covered as of 5:30am.
Happy New Year from Station 152
Throughout 2023, your volunteers responded to 209 emergencies in Laflin Borough and surrounding communities.
🔴Average Turnout Time:🔴
(911 Dispatch to apparatus responding)
Engine 1: 2.79 Minutes
Rescue 1: 2.77 Minutes
In addition to fire and rescue related calls, we also respond to the majority of medical emergencies in Laflin. Earlier this year, the Chief’s Car became a licensed Quick Response Service (QRS) by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. This license ensures that when we respond to a medical emergency, we are providing personnel trained to the minimum of a Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and also certifies we have the same tools on board as a BLS ambulance to provide high level care before our local paramedics arrive.
In November, we were able to replace our 1993 Heavy Rescue with a low mileage 2001 Rescue Pumper from Orange Village, Ohio. This addition increases the space for our growing rescue capabilities and also provides a second fire suppression capable vehicle carrying 300 gallons of water. The new Rescue Squad also has the ability to run 4 hydraulic “Jaws of Life” tools
simultaneously in the event of a serious vehicle accident or other rescue and will be in full service in January after receiving graphics, PA State Inspection, annual pump testing and LED lighting upgrades. (See photo for its progress)
And finally, in April the Greater Pittston Regional Ambulance became the primary EMS provider for Laflin Borough. We’re thrilled to start this new partnership with their top of the line staff who they, and the Hughestown Emergency Services Ambulance were instrumental in obtaining our Dept. of Health Certification.
Without the help of our residents participating in our annual fund drive and our dedicated volunteers, we could not do what we do and so we thank you. We are looking forward to a great 2024! Happy New Year!
Rescue Squad 152 now in service
December 2023 Laflin Fire Department has placed its new wet rescue , Rescue Squad 152 into full service
Laflin Fire upgrades the Rescue
Thursday Nov 16th 2023  was an exciting day for the Laflin Fire Department. Chief Marc Malvizzi and Captain Joe Boos traveled to Orange Village, Ohio to acquire the newest addition to our fleet.
As our rescue capabilities have continued to grow leading to the purchase of a walk-in style heavy rescue years ago, we still felt the need to serve our residents with two suppression capable fire apparatus.
This afternoon, we have purchased a very well maintained with just 13000 miles, 2001 Spartan/Precision Fire Apparatus Heavy Rescue/Pumper from the Orange Village Fire Department. This rescue has increased storage than our 1993 E-One Walk-In, and also comes equipped with a 300 gallon water tank, 50 gallons of on board foam and 2 pre connected hose lines. This will ensure uninterrupted fire suppression protection in the event Engine 1 is out for service or on another emergency call.
We cannot thank the Orange Village Fire Department and Chief Genova enough for making this process so quick and for their hospitality today.
Over the next few weeks, the new Rescue will receive some upgrades and lettering in addition to equipment mounting before being placed in service in  December. Stay tuned for progress updates! We think you might be surprised by what you see..

Laflin Boro Now Served by M29
4/1/2023 No it’s not an April Fools joke - as of 0000 hours today 4/1/23, the GPRA is proud to announce that we’re officially the primary EMS provider for Laflin Borough. We expect to roll out our popular annual subscription program for businesses and residents very soon. More information will be provided here. Laflin Fire adds Licensed QRS
1/21/2023 - Dating back to the 1990’s with our first paid firefighter trained to the level of Emergency Medical Technician, the Laflin Fire Department has provided a Medical Assist or “QRS” for our residents. Although their response is always quick, this was primarily because our first in paramedic unit comes from out of town, and our trained members can provide crucial care to patients experiencing a medical emergency.
This year, we took it upon ourselves to enhance that level of care we provide to Laflin by becoming officially recognized as a Quick Response Service through the Pennsylvania Department of Health for the Chief’s Car. This means that when this unit responds on an EMS assist, a medically trained provider equipped with everything a BLS ambulance carries besides the bed.
We will continue to strive to provide superior service to Laflin Borough by any means necessary and this becomes another tool in our tool box to do just that.
In the future. The goal is to also license Rescue 1 as a recognized service through the DOH. Rescue 1 primarily handles vehicle accidents and rescues on our 4 miles of Interstate 81 coverage area and is also utilized by other area agencies for rescue related services.

Laflin Fire handled 4 working fires on Main Street , the tragedy on Oakwood, 100's of motor vehicle crashes, many crashes with entrapment including the Medic 29 head on crash near the oblates,  and who can forget the tornado in June 2018.  All four Main St homes have been repaired and families have moved back to their homes.

In 2018 we also realized our dream to put in service a heavy rescue in Laflin.  As 2020 continues to twist and turn, we thank the members of the LVFD who continue to give the gift of their time and talents and we thank the residents of Laflin Borough for all their continued support.

Laflin Fire receives improved ISO rating
The Laflin Fire Department was recently notified that it's ISO rating has improved to a 4! Established in 1971, the Insurance Services Office (ISO) is the primary source of fire-related insurance risk to municipalities. ISO evaluators visit and evaluate municipal fire service organizations approximately once every five (5) to ten (10) years. ISO performs a comprehensive analysis of the complete fire protection system for the municipality, including the dispatch center, water supply infrastructure, and all aspects of fire service organization and operations. When we received our last score in 2013 LVFD improved from a 7 to a 5. This year LVFD was rated a 4! This puts Laflin Fire in one of the top tiers in the country along with many local fire departments with full time staffs.   In addition Laflins score was 70 % on it's way to a 3! We are proud of the hard work of our members in training, equipment upgrades and all aspects that the ISO looks at to rate the department.

Laflin Fire upgrades Jaws of Life on Rescue 152
Many upgrades have been taking place over the course of the last year, specifically to our rescue capabilities after handling nearly 200 motor vehicle accidents since 2016. Most notably, the company upgraded our “Jaws of Life” Hydraulic tools from our Amkus Rescue System purchased used in the early 2000’s, to a full compliment of Holmatro Hydraulic Tools. This includes a cutter, spreader, and ram.
These tools, although still purchased used to save our much needed funding, are still newer, lighter, and are more advanced than our previous hydraulic equipment.
In the last month, Rescue Chief Rienard and some of our other dedicated volunteers worked to make these tools easy to deploy with limited manpower. They are now powered to two electric reels powered by an electric generator with a slide out tray pictured below.
The work of our volunteers is what continues to allow us to provide the exceptional service we provide to the Borough of Laflin.

Greater Pittston Medic 29 Hit Head on in crash on Rt 315
1/18/18
This note from the GPRA : We received a call tonight that no emergency service agency ever wants to hear - a crash involving our own. Earlier this evening, Medic 29-B was involved in a serious crash on Route 315 in Laflin. We are happy to report that our members are doing reasonably well under the circumstances. With that said, to say the crew’s efforts were heroic is an understatement. Without any regard for their own injuries, our GPRA crew tended to the patient that was being transported and the occupants of the other vehicle. Moreover, there was a massive response of off duty GPRA personnel both to the scene and the hospital. When we say we are a family, its not lip service. We give our unending thanks to the many emergency service agencies who came to our aid (most without waiting to be called) including Laflin Fire Department, Hughestown Fire and EMS, Jenkins Twp Fire, Pittston Twp. EMS, Plains Medic 2, Trans Med Medic 10 and CHEMS Medic 38, and the multiple police agencies. Last but not least, our Pittston City Fire and Police brethren, who left a funeral detail to come to our crew’s aid. Much love, thanks, and respect to all. Finally, we offer our thoughts to the other involved parties.

Laflin Fire ISO rating soars to a 5 !

The results are in! The Laflin Volunteer Fire Department has soared to a 5 rating from ISO, a fire department rating agency that provides ratings to insurance companies in setting fire insurance rates.  There are 2864 fire departments rated in Pennsylvania, the highest percentage are 737 departments with a rating of 9. To put this in perspective of how difficult it is to achieve the highest score of 1, Plains Township was just issued a 4 after many upgrades to their training and equipment and the addition of their new ladder truck, putting them with other cities like Bethlehem, Kingston, Scranton and Erie. Wilkes Barre has the highest local rating at 3, joining just 25 others in Pa with a 3. All of these departments have a 24/7 paid staff.  Only 1 Pa department has a 1, and 2 Pa Departments have a 2 rating.

Laflin Fire Chief Marc Malvizzi said: “This is a testament to the hard work of the Laflin Volunteers who strive for excellence with training, equipment and safety.  With over 2000 hours of training in the last two years alone, most Pro Board Certified FF1, FF2, and Haz Mat courses, and equipment upgrades of a new QRS/Brush unit in 2011, and a Rescue Pumper in 2012, the LVFD stands ready to serve Laflin and surrounding communities with the best in fire protection”.
